Defect Detection using Laser Scanners
At a time of rapid development, introduction of new technologies,
and increasing world-wide competition, the quality specifications
for products and materials are becoming ever more demanding.
This also applies with regard to the avoidance of defects in
the surfaces of materials. Consequently there is a need for
systems which allow 100% on-line testing of materials and surfaces
during the production of, for example, photosensitive film,
magnetic and optical data storage media, paper, foils, metals
and textiles. As technically feasible solutions Laser Scanners
and CCD cameras have gained acceptance world-wide.
Especially in the field of photosensitive film, however, only
the application of the Laser Scanner is possible, as only with
the Laser Scanner satisfying Defect-finding - on simultaneous
avoiding of film exposure - is practicable. Devices of this
kind have been further developed in collaboration with a large
number of material manufacturers, and their optical systems
and electronics have been optimized for various specific applications.
This work has shown that the technique is suitable for detecting
and assessing a wide variety of different types of defects in
many different surfaces and materials.
